The analysis of spatial reference in this article considers language, a complex network of semiosis, as an intersubjective arena for negotiating meanings based on contingencies of the speaker, the context of language use, the socio-communicative process and the conceptual domains linked to spatial cognition. As a cognitive phenomenon, spatiality requires an approach to the mechanisms involved in the processing of spatial information, its organization into conceptual structures and access to these structures through linguistic coding. The consideration of intersubjective issues in the description of this phenomenon also requires that we abandon the abstract analysis of the process in an “idealized speaker” in favor of real situations of language in use, in a therapeutic context, by children whose linguistic-cognitive development is neuroatypical. In this paper, we discuss the notions of reference, referencing and conceptualization, as fundamental to understanding the concept of spatial reference. We then analyze the processes of attention, joint attention, and intersubjective communication in children’s language acquisition, to then describe the mechanisms of development of children’s spatial reasoning. Finally, we propose a methodology for analyzing the conceptualization of spatial reference, highlighting the role of interaction in the activities of intersubjective construction of linguistic meanings.
