A constructionist representation of adverbial adjectives and their semantics in Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of adverbial adjectives in Brazilian Portuguese. Through the lens of Usage Based Construction Grammar and Exemplar Theory, we propose a semantic representation for the Adverbial Adjective Construction (AAC). Since, depending on the type of modifier root, some items are interchangeable in some contexts, but not in others, we hypothesize that these similarities and differences are represented in the architecture by an intermediated level made up of semantic classes licensing the adverbial items. A thorough qualitative-interpretative analysis, based on data extracted from different corpora, made it possible to identify eight semantic classes representing eight constructions at the intermediate level. Thus, this study claims that semantic classes specific to the AAC should be posited, which influence the selection and licensing of adverbial items.

Estudante de especialização em Linguística Aplicada e Ensino de Idiomas pela Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso do Sul. Mestre em Linguística e bacharel em Letras - Português e Italiano pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Membro do Laboratório de Pesquisas em Linguística Cognitiva (LinC - UFRJ). Pesquisou durante a graduação e o mestrado a representação semântica de advérbios a partir da Gramática de Construções Baseada no Uso e da Teoria dos Exemplares. Tem maior interesse em representação cognitiva e experimentos linguísticos pelas perspectivas das teorias cognitivo-funcionais. 

Diogo Pinheiro, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ)

Tem doutorado em Linguística e mestrado em Língua Portuguesa pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. É Professor Associado da UFRJ, membro titular do Programa de Pós-graduação em Linguística da UFRJ e um dos coordenadores do LinC (Laboratório de Linguística Cognitiva). Atuou como Pesquisador Visitante na Universidade de Lancaster (Reino Unido), onde realizou estágio de pós-doutoramento. Com atuação inserida no campo da Gramática de Construções Baseada no Uso e da Linguística Cognitiva, tem se debruçado sobre a relação entre linguagem e intersubjetividade. Sua pesquisa recorre principalmente a métodos quantitativos (incluindo tanto análise de corpus quanto técnicas experimentais) para investigar, sincrônica e diacronicamente, construções gramaticais intersubjetivas.
