This article aims at describing the acoustic-intonational behavior of speech in two adult autistics in the production of different types of sentences, using the theoretical-instrumental framework of Autosegmental and Metrical Phonology (Pierrehumbert, 1980) and P-ToBI (Frota et al., 2015). The research is guided by the hypotheses that the speech of autistic adults differs from typical speech regarding i) syllabic duration and ii) variation in the range of F0. Data collection methodology utilized the Discourse Completion Task (DCT), adapted for Brazilian Portuguese, from the Interactive Atlas of the Prosody of Portuguese Project (InAPoP). The set of sentences was recorded in the Acoustic Phonetics Laboratory of UFRJ and produced by two autistic participants from the Experimental Group, and two neurotypical participants from the Control Group, aged between 24 and 28 years old, male, born in Rio de Janeiro. Acoustic measurements and intonational notation were performed in the pre-nuclear and nuclear regions of neutral declarative sentences, neutral total interrogatives, command, and vocatives (chant and insistent call) with the help of Praat. Our results demonstrate a tendency for stretching of post-tonic syllables in the speech of the Experimental Group, manifested by greater syllabic duration, and also a lesser variation of melodic rise/fall of F0 in the pre-nucleus and nucleus of sentences in this group. Regarding intonational notation, we did not find differences between the two groups. Our findings indicate that there is a difference in the speech of the autistic participants of our study relative to non-autistics, as our initial hypotheses predicted, which can eventually indicate a difference in the speech of this specific population.
