This article aims to discuss the empirical questions related to factive predicates regarding its presuppositional inference and the consequences that such questions impose on presupposition theories. From that, we will describe the diverging theoretical points of view in regard to the issue of projection: on the one hand, the lexicalist perspective, which assumes the conventional arrangement of presupposition inscribed in the semantic representation of presupposition triggers; on the other hand, the pragmatic perspective, which opposes that arrangement and aims to derive presupposition from a pragmatic mechanism attached to the general conversational principles that govern linguistic exchanges. In presenting these two theories, we seek to demonstrate the forms of solution that each one offers to the issue of projection based on assuming whether or not presuppositional inference is associated with the grammar of natural languages, and the gaps in their addressing of factive predicates. In conclusion, we will briefly point out how experimental researches may elucidate questions that are discussed along the article.
