Aspects of formal notation in Phonology: brief outline of its motivations and attainments and a preliminary exercise of application of declarative notation to Portuguese

Abstract

Formal notation is one of the essential requirements for formal approaches in many scientific areas. In itself, it can also correspond to an explicit attainment of scientific description. In this work, we will provide a general framework of the importance of notation for the expression of scientific thought, analyzing some of its characteristics and objectives. Based on this review, essential aspects related to the use of formal notation in linguistic studies – and, in particular, in various models of phonology (monostratal and multistratal, derivational and non-derivational models) – will be covered. Assuming Declarative Phonology as an adequate explanatory model for reconciling the observation of phonetic-phonological properties with its symbolic notation, a few formalizations of phonotactic restrictions in Portuguese will be proposed.

João Manuel Veloso, Universidade do Porto (UP)

Professor Catedrático de Linguística das Faculdades de Letras da Universidade do Porto (Portugal) e da Universidade de Macau (China). É investigador integrado do Centro de Linguística da Universidade do Porto, sendo o atual diretor do Departamento de Português da Universidade de Macau. É doutor e agregado em Linguística pela Universidade do Porto e a sua área de especialização centra-se na fonologia do português, com destaque para temas como a organização do sistema vocálico, os primitivos fonológicos, as estruturas prosódicas (sílaba, palavra prosódica e grupo clítico) e o peso fonológico. O seu trabalho recente tem sido desenvolvido em quadros teóricos como a fonologia dos elementos. As interfaces fonologia/fonética, fonologia/léxico e fonologia/morfologia, bem como a tipologia fonológica e as relações entre representações fonológicas e representações ortográficas, correspondem a outros temas de interesse na sua pesquisa.
