Learning through the senses for deafblind people: the importance of touch for communication

The sensory senses of the human body, namely: hearing, vision, smell, taste and touch, are channels for receiving information from the external world into our body (Soler, 1999). Therefore, we can say that the body learns through sensory channels, however, the educational system has an emphasis on learning through visual and auditory channels. When working with deafblind students, it is necessary to find teaching strategies based on other sensory channels or also incorporating visual and auditory residues depending on the student’s condition. The present research addresses and problematizes learning through the senses, however, greater emphasis will be placed on aspects related to touch because the communication of the person with deafblindness comes from this sense. For this, a theoretical deepening was carried out on tactile cognition (Nicholas, 2011) and forms of communication for people with deafblindness (Cader-Nascimento; Costa, 2010; Cambruzzi; Costa, 2016).
