Phi-features in natural languages: the case of Brazilian Portuguese

Two changes studied in the beginning of diachronic studies in Brazil were: a) Pontes (1987), who shows that BP has become a partial Topic Prominent language, and b) Duarte’s (1993) study, which shows that BP has partially lost the principle “Avoid pronoun”. However, these studies do not show any relation between the two changes. The present study tries to show that there is a relevant relation: in Topic prominent languages the referential system consists of Nouns and not Pronouns, and, therefore, they do not make use of phi-features, except for the feature of plurality.
