Abstract

Professor Ana Maria Carvalho is a prominent Brazilian sociolinguist whose significant academic work focuses on language contact; since completing her Ph.D.—at the University of California, Berkeley —she has investigated the Spanish varieties spoken in Arizona, USA, and in Uruguayan Portuguese, a linguistic variety spoken in northern Uruguay, along the border with Brazil, in the departments of Rivera, Artigas, Cerro Largo, Tacuarembó, and Salto. In this interview, the director of the film “Vozes das Margens” discusses the motivations and characteristics of the “sociolinguistic documentary” as a film genre, and the challenges and opportunities it presents for researchers and speech communities, in addition to explaining fundamental aspects of this specific situation of linguistic contact: the effects of the overlap with Spanish as the official language, the issue of naming the linguistic variety—with its ideological implications—the relationship with Brazilian Portuguese, and the conflict between local identities and normative ideals.

Ana Maria Carvalho, Universidade do Arizona (UArizona)

Doutora pela Universidade de Califórnia, Berkeley. É professora do Departamento de Espanhol e Português, da Universidade do Arizona, onde coordena o Laboratório de Pesquisa Sociolinguística (SoReLa) e também atua como coordenadora do Programa de Aquisição e Ensino de Segunda Língua (SLAT), sendo docente associada do Centro de Estudos Latino-Americanos (CLAS) da referida universidade. Desenvolve pesquisa voltada para contato linguístico e bilinguismo, com ênfase especial na variação e na mudança linguística. Tem particular interesse no desenvolvimento de gramáticas variáveis paralelas em contextos de contato linguístico prolongado em regiões de fronteira.

Xoán Carlos Lagares, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF-CNPq)

Doutor em Lingüística, Literatura no Âmbito Galego-Português pela Universidade da Coruña. Atualmente é professor titular da Universidade Federal Fluminense e membro do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Linguagem da UFF. Tem experiência na área de Lingística, com ênfase em Política Linguística, Linguística Histórica e Linguística Aplicada, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: galego-português, história social e cultural das línguas e norma linguística. Coordenador da Comissão de Políticas Públicas da Associação Brasileira de Linguística (Abralin). Presidente da Asociación Internacional de Estudos Galegos.
