The alternation between tu/você in 20th-century Piauí writing: linguistic and social conditioning

Abstract

This study investigates the variation in forms of reference to the second-person singular subject (tu/você) based on the written production of illustrious and not illustrious people from Piauí in the 20th century, more specifically between the 1920s and 1990s, in light of the principles of historical sociolinguistics (Hernández-Campoy; Schilling, 2012), Variation Theory (Labov, 1994), and the process of submitting historical data to RBrul (RStudio). The main hypothesis is that você was already emerging as more productive than tu in the 20th century era of Brazilian Portuguese, as observed by Scherre et al. (2021) in light of Deus (2009) and Cardoso (2008) for the ALiB data. In general, we observed the prevalence of você (60.03%), although with intense alternation with tu (39.97%) in letters from Piauí. We found that the form você is favored by the linguistic variables verbal person, formal and semantic parallelism, subject expression, and by the social variables age group and schooling, following the results of Souza (2021) and Souza (2012), also conducted through the analysis of historical samples within the scope of historical sociolinguistics.

Luiz Egito de Souza Barros, Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI)

Possui especialização em Língua portuguesa pela Universidade Federal do Piauí (2000) e mestrado em Lingüística pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (2004). Atualmente é professor assistente 3 da Universidade Federal do Piauí. Tem experiência na área de Lingüística, com ênfase em Fonética e Fonologia do Português, Linguística Histórica e Língua Latina.

Márcia Cristina de Brito Rumeu, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

Atualmente, é Professora Titular de Língua Portuguesa da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (FALE/UFMG), atua nos cursos de Graduação e de Pós-Graduação da Faculdade de Letras da UFMG. Possui a Graduação em Letras (1999), o Mestrado (2004), o Doutorado (2008) em Letras Vernáculas, na área de Língua Portuguesa, pela Faculdade de Letras da UFRJ. Concluiu, entre agosto de 2018 e julho de 2019, o Pós-Doutorado, com Bolsa de Estágio do Programa Nacional de Pós-Doutorado da CAPES, na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, sob a supervisão da Profa. Dra. Dinah Callou. Atuou, entre outubro de 2015 e julho de 2018, como Gestora Editorial frente ao Setor de Periódicos da Faculdade de Letras da UFMG. Em 2013, publicou a sua Tese de Doutorado intitulada LÍNGUA E SOCIEDADE: A HISTÓRIA DO PRONOME 'VOCÊ' NO PORTUGUÊS BRASILEIRO por intermédio da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) com o apoio da FAPERJ. Em 2011, foi contemplada com o 'PREMIO JÓVENES INVESTIGADORES ALFAL', no XVI Congreso Internacional de la ALFAL (Asociación de Lingüística y Filología de la América Latina). É integrante das equipes do Rio de Janeiro e de Minas Gerais do Projeto PHPB (Para uma História do Português Brasileiro). Integra também como pesquisadora o Acervo dos Escritores Mineiros (AEM/FALE/UFMG) e o Núcleo de Pesquisa em Variação Linguística também desenvolvido no âmbito da FALE/UFMG. Além disso, é integrante dos seguintes grupos de pesquisa cadastrados no Diretório de Grupos de Pesquisa do CNPq: 1) Formas e fórmulas de tratamento em español e em português sob a sua coordenação em parceria com a Profa. Dra. Célia Lopes; 2) Laboratório de História do Português Brasileiro (HistLing/UFRJ) sob a coordenação da Professora Dra. Célia Lopes (UFRJ). Integra também o Eixo 1 do GT de Sociolinguística da ANPOLL (Variação e Mudança Linguística). Está atualmente como Vice-Diretora do Centro de Estudos Literários e Culturais, órgão complementar da FALE, cf. Portaria No 019/2024 FALE/UFMG. Possui experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Sociolinguística Histórica, Linguística Histórica, Filologia e Crítica Textual.  É Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq - Nível 2. http://www.letras.ufmg.br/profs/marciarumeu/
