Abstract

The perception and spatial understanding are intrinsic to geographic science and are part of an original way of thinking, based on three dimensions, which seek to understand the spatiality of objects, things, people and phenomena, whose spatial representation, translated into maps, or pictures geographical areas, is an essential element. The quilombos are social groups that mark the heritage of the culture of African origin in the Brazilian territory, a reflection of slavery and contemporary struggles for the recognition of rights. The punctual location of the Quilombo Remaining Communities aims to explore their spatial distribution in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The survey of information, conducted in government bodies for land recognition, regularization and research institutions, resulted in a Geographical Database with the georeferenced location of each community, which shows a heterogeneous spatial distribution. It is expected that the maps will contribute to research in different areas of knowledge and in educational actions in the territories themselves.
