Regarding language, Nelson Rodrigues’s theatre is the culmination of a historic process related to assimilating Brazilian language in literature. All along the centuries, there have been attempts to “Brazilianize” the literary expression. The criticism of José de Alencar and Mário de Andrade are important landmarks that came up in the contexts of Romanticism and Modernism. This article shows, by surveying extensively his theatrical works, how Rodrigues, involved in the modernization of theatre in Brazil, made a true linguistic revolution onstage and accomplished the most complete plastic recreation of Brazilian prosody in literature, as the survey demonstrates.
