The present work studies the graphic standardization of imperial Brazil, based on the etymological graphemes prescribed in the Compendio da Grammatica da Lingua Nacional (1835) by Antonio Alvares Pereira Coruja. Considering the assumptions of the History of Linguistic Ideas, which investigates the construction of linguistic knowledge as a way of instrumentalizing language, the objective is to verify the insertion of the etymological principle in prescriptions capable of forming and systematizing models of graphic erudition. The comparison with other works from the rationalist period and with works from the scientific period points to the vitality of a writing tradition, which intensified at the turn of the 19th century.
