Aspectos da pobreza na cidade pós-clássica: as homilias de João Crisóstomo como fonte para a História Social de Antioquia

Abstract

Nesse artigo, pretendemos investigar o crescimento da pobreza em Antioquia, a metropolis da província da Síria-Coele, nas últimas décadas do século IV, bem como iluminar as táticas (ou técnicas) empregadas pelos pobres para sobreviver mediante as informações contidas nas homilias de João Crisóstomo, um autor que ocupou o posto de presbítero da congregação antioquena entre 386 e 397. Além disso, temos também por objetivo refletir sobre o emprego da literatura homilética como uma fonte relevante para a compreensão da realidade socioeconômica das províncias orientais do Império Romano na Antiguidade Tardia à luz dos pressupostos da História Social.
