Null subject, VS order, and focused subject in Brazilian letters from the 19th and 20th centuries

Abstract

This paper brings a comparative analysis of the evolution of the null (vs. overt) pronominal subject in comparison with the evolution of post-verbal subject constructions (VS order) observing the informational status of the subject and the focused subjects in a corpus of letters written by Brazilians born in the 19th and 20th centuries. This comparison is based on the premise that the parametric changes that occur in BP regarding the Null Subject Parameter have an effect on the subject order. According to the literature about null subjects, a consistent null subject language allows for “free” VS order, that is, postverbal subjects that have the informational status of new information or focus. In this way, when we compare the null subject rates with VS order and subject focusing in a diachronic sample, we can see the embedding of the change. Our results show that the decrease in null subject rates is accompanied by a decrease in the rates of VS order and post-verbal subject focusing. Furthermore, we see a specialization of cleft constructions to mark contrastive focus. The results confirm the hypotheses that a null subject grammar is related to VS order to mark new information or focused information.

Mestre em Letras Vernáculas pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1999) e doutora em Linguística pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2006), Silvia Cavalcante é Professora Associada da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. O interesse de pesquisa é nos estudos de sintaxe diacrônica, com ênfase numa abordagem formal para os estudos da mudança, principalmente na detecção de gramáticas em competição na mudança linguística (Kroch, 1989).

É Doutoranda do Programa de Letras Vernáculas da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Mestra em Língua Portuguesa pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro e Licenciada em Português-Literaturas de Língua Portuguesa pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Atuou como professora substituta do Setor de Língua Portuguesa da UFRJ. No mestrado, estudou as relações entre as mudanças no padrão de ordem do PB e a marcação sintática de foco em cartas pessoais escritas por brasileiros nascidos nos séculos XIX e XX. Tem interesse em sintaxe diacrônica, mudança linguística na perspectiva formal e focalização.
