This text discusses the emerging need for a psychosocial perspective regarding the boundaries found in intercultural relations between hearing and deaf people and communities in our country. The emphasis is on the most evident marker that is considered one of the most palpable borders: linguistic difference. Based on a bibliographic review, using Flávio L. A. da Silveira (2005), António S. Ribeiro (2002) and Gladis Perlin (1998) to begin the discussion of the idea of ‘border’, we will identify, analyze and discuss the repercussions of this dynamic in the deaf community in its partiality or totality, as well as language as a space of difference based on its social, political and psychological impacts. At the end, we propose practical reflections to approach language no longer as a barrier, but a point of meeting and progress.
