Linguistic variation is a characteristic of all natural languages. Language and society are intimately related and exerting mutual influence on one another. In the teaching of the Portuguese language, this criterion must be taken into account. In this sense, the present study aims to raise awareness among high school students regarding the legitimacy of linguistic variation in Brazil and the social implications of speech-based discrimination. The theoretical framework guiding this research is Educational Sociolinguistics. Its foundation is based on the worksof Bagno, Stubbs e Gagné (2002), Bagno (2007, 2017), Baronas (2022), Bortoni-Ricardo (2004, 2005), Scherre (2005), Silva (2002), among others. The methodology employed is qualitative-interpretative and adopts as a strategy the conduction of workshops for students in the 2nd and 3rd grades of high school at a public school located in Ceilândia – DF. Data analysis revealed that the discussions and reflections carried out in the workshops contributed to expanding the students’ knowledge of linguistic variation, linguistic and social heterogeneity in Brazil, and linguistic prejudice and its consequent discrimination, pointing toward possible changes in attitude regarding Brazilian linguistic diversity. Furthermore, the analysis of the letters evidenced that the students were able to adapt their language to the interlocutor, demonstrating greater awareness of linguistic diversity and respect for differences.
