Geoinformation has always been part of our life and has accompanied us through our civilizational evolution. Currently, the importance of this perspective resides in its pervasive presence in everyday social life, as expressed in different planning and management scenarios involving the most diverse social, political, economic, and environmental dimensions. The need to use spatial and temporal analysis models, associated with geographic science, was the motivation for the development of geoinformation research within the scope of the Graduate Program in Geography at UFRJ (PPGG/UFRJ). This article seeks to present a historical reading of this kind of research developed within the PPGG/UFRJ, uncovering the first steps toward creating geoprocessing in Brazil, which actively involved PPGG researchers, in addition to presenting the significant contribution to studies in geoinformation developed over the last fifty year within the PPGG. In conclusion, a reflection is offered concerning the past trajectory of institutional consolidation as well as future perspectives for the PPGG/UFRJ as a national and international research center in Geoinformation.
