This study investigates phonetic, morphosyntactic, and lexical phenomena with a view to an approach within the scope of dialectal variation in European Portuguese in a specific region of mainland Portugal: Beira Baixa. Based on the analysis of data extracted from audio files available in the MADISON atlas (Sonorous Dialect Map), which reflect everyday language, the following dialectal features are observed that deviate from the standard norm and thus distinguish the Beira Baixa variety: a) phonetics: palatalization of stressed a, labialization of stressed e, fronting of the retracted vowel [ɐ] to the non-retracted vowel [e], reduction of the vowel i, insertion of i in word-final position, palatalization of u, monophthongization, realization of the voiceless palatal affricate, and suppression of the fricative [s] in word-final position; b) morphosyntax: preposition a preceding the infinitive form of the verb, expletive Ele, clitic pronouns in proclitic position, place adverbs in pre-verbal position, ao depois; c) lexicon: words distinct from the standard norm and non-dictionary words.
