Unconventional food plants (PANC) are a group of plants, often considered as “weeds”, that are commonly consumed by traditional communities in Brazil and around the world. Among these plants, the “erva-capitão” (Hydrocotyle bonariensis Lam.) stands out as an option to be included in popular diets, having several beneficial properties for the body. The objective of the study was to carry out a literature review on existing studies related to the herb, focusing on its food potential. Currently, this plant is widely used by traditional communities as a source of various vitamins, minerals and antioxidant compounds, and is used by folk medicine to treat illnesses such as rheumatism and illnesses that affect the kidneys and liver. Considered as a potential antimicrobial and antioxidant agent, the research potential of the herb in food and nutrition is notable. There is a lack of scientific articles about this PANC, with a notable need for more research into its antimicrobial and antioxidant potential, its sensory evaluation and its application in food and gastronomy.
