Abstract

The images that comprise this Photo Essay were produced by Paula Teixeira at Ilê Axé Odé Tá Ofá Sí Inã, a Ketu Candomblé terreiro located in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil, over several years. The photos portray aspects of the relationship between members of this Afro-religious community and certain votive foods that, after preparation, are delivered as offerings to the orixás and later consumed by the people. The images aim to show stages of the journey taken by four typical dishes of terreiro cuisine: Acaçá, Amalá, Axoxô, and Ipeté. Each detail reveals connections between food and the sacred, between faith and flavor. Paula's work, through images, demonstrates to both insiders and outsiders the role of food in Candomblé, which goes far beyond its materiality..
