The article is developed around a dialogue with Professor Rodolfo Ilari, it is divided into three parts: (i) the ‘Ilari student’’s view on language and the teaching of grammar; (ii) the ‘Ilari university professor’’s view on language and the teaching of grammar; (iii) linguistics and teaching according to Ilari. In this last part, the interviewee addresses the teachers of the basic education network, and reports on the use of linguistics that he would do if he had the opportunity to act as a teacher of Portuguese at school.
