Abstract

The Yaokwa Ritual, recognised as heritage by IPHAN, UNESCO and UN, marks the beginning of the annual calendar for the Maipure-Aruak language group in the state of Mato Grosso. It is carried out in a series of stages lasting seven months, involving the cultivation of maize and manioc, dam fishing and the preparation of food and drink. All of these preparations serve as a bargaining chip for the Yakairitis, the feared subterranean beings who hold natural resources. This study sought to analyse these exchanges in the light of the Maussian gift, understanding exchanges as contracts between gods and men, maintaining the order of the cosmos and avoiding its misfortunes. In order to achieve the objectives of this work, bibliographical research on the selected group was used. The Yaokwa ritual is an example of how ways of making food are intrinsically linked to the management of natural and supernatural resources and can be analysed from the perspective of an Amerindian gastronomy.
