Aventureiro caiçara community, Ilha Grande, Brasil: an analysis of food and production pattern

Abstract

This article is aimed to analyse changes that Aventureiro Village’s peoples have gone through, in production model and food pattern. Aventureiro Village is a caiçara Community located in Ilha Grande, in Angra dos Reis city, on the Southern coast of Rio de Janeiro state, in Brazil. “Filhos do Aventureiro”, as they call themselves, build up their knownledge from what environment provide historically, developing livelihood based on fishing and plantations. This qualitative phenomenological research was composed by  bibliographical survey, semi-structured interviews and direct observation, with systematisation and analysis  of data. That population’s physical space and cultural practices were restricted during years, so what it used to be produced and collected in the territory of the community before that have been bought in the city, to local residents and tourists food, altering meaningfully this community’s culture and traditional know-how related to food, often supported by collective efforts and family relationships. Traditional meals are shared only with local residents.
